JI began in 1989 with a meeting of three CEOs concerned about the number of
children and youth that
were being placed in out-of-county and out-of-state residential
placements. Through this initial
collaboration, out-of-county placements were reduced
by 40%.

Joint Initiatives became a Colorado nonprofit corporation in 1995 and obtained tax
exempt status in 1996.
